I've spent the past several weeks really reflecting on my career and how to improve. My last blog post on "Transition" is a reflection on that. This post is really a continuation of that post more personalized for me. So, here are a few of the things I'm working on for myself.
1. Better at memorizing- this is an area I am really challenged on. I have no problems it seems with lyrics, but I really use my iPad as a crutch for chord changes. I have done so for the past oh I don't know 30 years, so I have a lot of retraining to do.
2. I am privileged to work at a place that hosts some fantastic writers nights. This past Saturday was incredible. The challenge that I have for myself coming out of Saturday is to improve my guitar skills. I can strum about anything, but to add a few licks really adds to a performance. Not only that but it challenged me even more to work on my writing.
3. I'm really working on creating a "memorable moment." I've done a lot of reading, watching and listening to performers here and the ones that really stand out seem to always have one or two moments that stand out and stick with me. Whether it is a story, an expression, a connection or a subtle movement the artists who really jump out to me seem to all have them. I'm watching video of my performances and (please understand this is not a brag) I feel my vocals are solid, but I think I'm easily forgotten. I think part of that is my background in church music. In church the music is not about me or my performance or creating those moments. In performances outside of church, I am having to learn and train myself to "perform." For me that is not natural, so I'm learning and evaluating.
Well... this is my improvement list for myself. What are you working on on you?
