After watching the news this morning I notice that there is a new film out about the life, well controversial bit, of Princess Diana.
I can see why filmakers focus on the 'interesting' part of her life such as her affairs after the separation from Prince Charles and her death but she did so much good too which seems to be skipped over a little in the film. Is this the difference between songwriting and film making? Many of the best song lyrics focus on the nitty gritty of life and not the sensationalism that film biopics draw attention to.
Another thing that stands out from the film is that however good an actress Naomi Watts may be she bears little resemblance to Princess Diana, and appears to look more like Marilyn Monroe than Diana in the clips I have seen. Glamourizing Diana or miscasting, I'm not sure but for me it doesn't work.
I was lucky enough to meet Princess Diana in the early 90's and films like these sadden me as she was so much more than she gets shown, she was an icon at the time but she was also a real human being. Maybe we will have to wait for that film.
